So why do so many people choose the network marketing industry?  In this blog I am going to talk about some of the most common reasons people look for a company to team up with and start their own business.

What Is Network Marketing?

Network marketing, also know as direct selling, is where people can earn commission on selling a company’s products or services, but also on the sales that their team of consultants/representatives/distributors make.

What Are The Myths Of Network Marketing?

Unfortunately there are still some very untrue myths surrounding the network marketing industry. Despite millions of being worldwide joining this industry , there is still a lot of confusion an skepticism amongst many people. Pyramid Schemes Pyramid schemes do unfortunately exist and sometimes disguise themselves as network marketing companies, the easiest way to distinguish the difference is that a legal network marketing company offers genuine products or services to their customers. Members of the genuine network marketing companies operate within legal and ethical boundaries and compensate their distributors for their sales and those of their team. Get-Rich-Quick-Scheme Another myth is that network marketing companies pull their distributors in on the promise that they will make fast money. Like all businesses out there, a network marketing business takes time, effort, dedication and commitment. Only The People At The Top Make Money Another myth that is heard a lot is that only those at the “top” make money. This is not true. I cannot speak on behalf of other companies, but with Scentsy, we have to achieve a qualification every single month to earn commission on the efforts of our team. As a leader (or consultant at any level) to benefit from having a team, you need to of earned a certain sales target for your own personal sales (not the sales your team do) to earn bonuses on the sales of your team every single month. Therefore leaders need to lead by example, as well as offering training and support to their team.

Flexibility and Independence

One of the most common reasons people choose network marketing is the flexibility and independence it can offer them.  The traditional 9-5 job has many benefits, however you rarely have the flexibility many need to be able to go on holiday when they want, attend school meetings, assemblies etc and social events.

The flexibility and independence of network marketing appeals to stay at home parents, retirees and those looking to step away from the corporate lifestyle.  It gives you the opportunity to work on your own terms and create a business that fits your lifestyle. 

One of the things that impacted me the most after I joined Scentsy was that I was now “working to live, not living to work” which is the opposite of what I had been doing after working in a corporate job for over 14 years.

Low Business Start-Up Costs

Starting your own business can be very costly.  According to Geniac, in the UK, the average start-up cost is £5,000 to get launched and then approximately another £22,756 throughout the first year of trading.  Some of these expenses include legal fees, insurance, marketing, premises, stock and equipment.

In contrast, network marketing businesses typically have much smaller start-up costs.  The vast majority of companies offer a business starter kit which can include products and business tools to help get people started.  For example, some of the products included in the Scentsy starter kit are a warmer and some wax melts as well as business tools including catalogues, scented wax tester pots and a free website for the first 3 months (optional thereafter) .  I cannot speak for other companies, but I can honestly, hand on heart, say that I launched my business on my starter kit and we are still here nearly 12 years later.

Another benefit of joining a network marketing company is the ongoing support and training you will receive from not only the company itself (if you wanted it) and your sponsor.  Starting your own business can sometimes feel lonely, but not with network marketing.  Although you are all selling the same products, you are joining a team of other consultants/representatives and that comradery can be invaluable to the growth and success of your business.

To Build A Residual Income

With any business, for earnings, you get out what you put in.  If you work your business part-time, then you can expect to earn part-time commission.  However, if you are looking to build a business to gain a residual income you need to throw yourself into your business, but I can speak from experience in saying all the hardwork is so worth it!

Network marketing companies have commission based compensation plans which means the more you sell, the more you earn.  This means that your income is uncapped as long as you are willing to put the energy into it.

A Second Income Stream

Not everyone joins a network marketing company with the aim of creating a full-time residual income.  It could be that you are 100% happy in your current role, but you are looking to bring in a little extra income to your home, maybe to help pay those bills, or have money for treats or days out.  Or maybe you are saving for that dream wedding, destination holiday or deposit for a house, whatever it may be, network marketing could be the perfect fit for you.

You have control of the time you put in, you are not answerable to anyone, so if one week you don’t have any time to dedicate to your business then that is ok.  You are your own boss.

Self-Development

Most network marketing companies provide training, support and resources to their consultants/representatives and Scentsy is amongst those.

You will have access to training on sales techniques, leadership skills (if you choose you would like to build a team) and personal development. 

When joining a company, you will also choose a sponsor and become part of a wider team.  The vast majority of leaders also offer their team members training on a wide variety of subjects as well.  For example, at the moment, we are very much concentrating on social media in our team and I am currently delivering training on Instagram and TikTok.

The skills you learn will not only benefit your network marketing business, but can help you in other areas of your life as well.

Unlimited Growth Potential

A lot of traditional employed roles may have limited opportunities for growth and advancement.

With a network marketing company, as you build your business and build a team (if you choose to), you can increase your earnings and advance within your company.


Another benefit of being part of a network marketing company is that many of them operate internationally and this can mean that you can build your business outside of your local area.  All the legalities of international expansion are done for you!  You can run a global business, right from your living room.


As an example, we have customers throughout Europe, but team members in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

To conclude, there are many reasons why people join a network marketing company.  Flexibility, low start-up costs, earning potential, second income flow, personal development or just something for them to take ownership of, whatever the reason is, it is important to note that network marketing isn’t for everyone.  However you measure success, it requires hard work, persistence, and dedication.
